Following the success of London 2017, UK Athletics once again engaged RockIT to support the IAAF Birmingham 2018 Indoor Championships, a prestigious event requiring a comprehensive, turnkey network solution. Though smaller in scale, this event called for similar high-performance infrastructure to ensure seamless connectivity for media, timing, broadcast, and technical teams.
Leveraging insights from London 2017, RockIT delivered a streamlined yet robust network architecture tailored to the unique demands of the indoor setting. The design centered on a fully redundant core network, scaled to meet the needs of an indoor venue without compromising performance. Dual 10Gb connections ensured reliable service for essential operations and safeguarded against any potential interruptions.
A separate, high-bandwidth network for media and broadcast teams allowed for real-time content delivery and high-quality streaming. Our network design prioritised the accuracy and precision required for competition timing and scoring, ensuring flawless integration between timing systems and score displays.
To streamline coordination among various teams, we deployed a communications network with multiple VLANs, each tailored to specific user groups (media, technical, and event operations), securing bandwidth and optimising performance.
With a smaller venue footprint than London 2017, RockIT’s agile team efficiently deployed the network in a compressed timeline, delivering the infrastructure and communications systems well in advance of the event. This proactive approach allowed UK Athletics to move into a ready-to-use, fully equipped environment, giving their teams time to fine-tune operations and focus on event execution.
